Kabul Korrespondence

Fresh, factual, and funky view of Afghanistan and the surrounding Central Asian region

Chance of a life time

Wednesday, September 19, 2007

We have been working over the last few months on a very exciting project; National Geographic Kids Magazine is holding a photo competition for chidren under 15 in 18 different countries around the world. Aina Photo is lucky enough to be facilitating the Afghan section.

The contestants have to produce one landscape, portrait and animal photograph. Most who have ever used a camera before are now being trained in the finer points of photography. We have volunteer Simon and Nasim (one of Aina Photo recent graduates) giving classes to students at the Aschiana Orphanage.

The first prize is a trip to Washington DC to meet the editors of National Geographic and take part in an exhibition of the winning images. We have our fingers crossed that one of our students may get 'the' image.

As soon as we have the images selected we will post them on line. I would like to to ask you to get involved and give us your opinion of which is the best portrait, landscape and animal photograph of the collection. This will be a great way for the students to get some feed back on their work.

So stay tuned for some images from Afghanistan's new bloods.

Tuesday, September 18, 2007

Woops, Im a little bit late with my welcome, but 3 weeks ago we had a fine young man names Simon from Germany start volunteering at Aina Photo. It didnt take long for him to settle in and take the reins while I am away in Europe "working".

In the little time Simon has been in Kabul he has done some great work and we know there is more to come in the next 3 weeks of his internship.

Keep up the good work Simon, see you in a couple of weeks. T

Live from the south of France

Saturday, September 08, 2007

Bonjour,

This is a live post from Perpignan in the "South of France", where I and my good friend Zohreh (the best female Iranian Photojournalist) having been promoting Aina Photo at the world prestige reportage festival.

We spent he last week "networking" with the worlds top editors and agencies, informing them about the work we do in Afghanistan and about the "se manufique" images our students have been producing.

Its been tough, spending time in the sun, drinking rose and meeting amazing people, but hey someone has to do it!

So "excus e moi" for my absence from cyber-land, but i promise to report more as soon as I get back to Kabul. Until then, stay safe and enjoy.
